Canyoning or rafting in Annecy: which to choose?

Craving white-water thrills around Lake Annecy but torn between canyoning and rafting? Both share the spirit of adventure and the fresh water of mountain rivers… yet they offer completely different experiences. Here's a clear comparison to pick the one that suits you — or to decide to do both.

Canyoning and rafting: two ways to experience white water around Annecy.

1. The difference in one sentence

It's simple: canyoning takes place in a vertical gorge, on foot and swimming, descending a series of waterfalls, slides and pools. Rafting takes place on a river, aboard an inflatable raft, paddling together to run the rapids.

Put another way: in canyoning, you go down (jumps, slides, abseils); in rafting, the river carries you and you form a crew. Two moods, two pleasures — and neither requires being an athlete.

2. Canyoning: descending a gorge

Canyoning means following a mountain stream from top to bottom, in a neoprene wetsuit. You alternate walking, swimming in white water, jumping into pools, sliding down natural chutes and abseiling down waterfalls. It's a playful, progressive activity where everyone moves at their own pace.

Big plus in Annecy: canyoning is done right by the lake, notably at the Angon canyon in Talloires, less than 30 minutes from the centre. The discovery trip is open from age 8 (from €57), and jumps are always optional. To see it all, check the guide to the canyons of Annecy.

Ideal if you love: the verticality, turquoise water, "à la carte" sensations (jump when you want) and a wild, enclosed setting.

3. Rafting: taming a river as a team

Rafting takes place aboard an inflatable raft that holds a whole crew (often 6 to 8 people), paddle in hand, under the instructions of a guide seated at the back. The goal: to run the rapids, waves and eddies of a mountain river together. It's a collective, exhilarating activity where the group's teamwork makes all the difference.

Around Annecy, there's no rafting river on the lake itself: the best spots are on the neighbouring alpine rivers such as the Dranse (Chablais, Haute-Savoie) and the Isère (Tarentaise), about an hour's drive away. You don't need to be a strong swimmer: a life jacket and helmet are provided, and the activity is family-friendly depending on the flow. Ideal if you love: teamwork, speed, big waves and an adventure where the effort is shared.

5. How to choose by profile

A family with young children? Discovery canyoning at Angon, from age 8 and minutes from Annecy, is the easiest to organise, with adjustable thrills. See also our discovery canyoning trip.

For a group, a stag/hen party or team building? Rafting excels at team spirit and easily handles large groups. Canyoning remains a great group option if you prefer variety (jumps, swimming, abseils).

Looking for maximum vertical thrills? Go for canyoning (abseils in the Angon waterfall). Want speed and big waves? Rafting on the Dranse or the Isère.

Note: both activities run mainly from late spring to autumn, are supervised by professional guides and provide all technical gear. No prior experience is needed to start.

6. Why not do both?

Good news: canyoning and rafting are perfectly complementary. Many visitors use a weekend around Annecy to combine a morning of canyoning at Angon with a day of rafting on the Dranse or the Isère — two faces of alpine white water in a single trip.

It's also a favourite formula for groups, stag/hen parties and corporate events: you vary the fun, cater to every level, and everyone finds their thing. On the canyon side, we take care of everything; on the rafting side, our partners at rafting-annecy.fr take over.

Frequently asked questions

Canyoning or rafting: which is easier to start with?

Both are beginner-friendly. Discovery canyoning (from age 8, at Angon) is very progressive and jumps are optional. Rafting mainly means paddling as a team. The choice comes down to your taste: verticality (canyoning) or group thrills (rafting).

Can you go rafting in Annecy itself?

Not on the lake: rafting takes place on the neighbouring alpine rivers, mainly the Dranse (Chablais) and the Isère (Tarentaise), about 1 h from Annecy. Canyoning is done right by the lake, at the Angon canyon in Talloires.

Do you need to know how to swim?

For canyoning, being comfortable in the water and able to swim a few metres is enough (the wetsuit helps you float). For rafting, swimming isn't essential: the life jacket provides buoyancy.

From what age?

Discovery canyoning is open from age 8. Rafting is family-friendly, with the minimum age depending on the river's flow and the season. In both cases, a guide adapts the trip to the group.

What's the best season?

Both activities run mainly from late spring to autumn, peaking in summer. River and stream flow shapes the sensations; the slot is chosen with the guide based on the weather.
