Why the Letterbox is THE beginner canyon of Annecy

30 minutes from Annecy, between Menthon-Saint-Bernard and Talloires, the Angon canyon flows down towards the lake in an almost Mediterranean setting. Its nickname — the "Letterbox" — comes from a characteristic narrow slot where the river dives through the rock. For 30 years, this is where we have been taking those who discover canyoning.

This course was designed so you can experience every sensation of canyoning without technical prerequisites: natural slides carved into the rock, progressive small jumps of 1 to 5 metres (always optional), abseils guided step by step, and turquoise pools where you swim with a view of the lake.

The environment is protected, the water is pristine, and the descent alternates aquatic passages with contemplative moments. It's the course our guides recommend to families with children, beginner groups, and anyone curious to discover this activity in the best possible conditions.

Angon canyon Letterbox in Annecy

Your discovery trip, step by step

About 2h30 from the moment you put on your wetsuit to when you step out of the canyon. Here's what you'll experience.

1
15 minutes · At the base

Welcome & equipment

Meet at our Angon base, by the lake. The guide welcomes you, fits you with a 5mm neoprene wetsuit, helmet and harness. Safety briefing, course overview, and we're ready to go.

2
10 minutes · Forest trail

Approach hike

A short shaded trail gently leads you to the canyon entry. A chance to warm up, enjoy the alpine forest, and chat with the guide and fellow participants.

3
20 minutes · First contact with water

First steps in the canyon

We enter the canyon, discover the water temperature (warmer than you'd think with the wetsuit!) and take the first small introductory jumps. The guide demonstrates basic whitewater swimming techniques and safety positions.

4
1 hour · The heart of the adventure

Slides, jumps and first abseils

The highlight of the trip. Natural slides carved into the rock, progressive jumps from 1 to 5 metres (always optional), and your first abseils down small waterfalls. Every passage is explained, supervised and adapted to your level.

5
20 minutes · The magic moment

The "Letterbox" passage

The passage that gave the canyon its name: a narrow slot where the river dives through, followed by a short abseil in a spectacular setting. One of the most photographed moments of our trips.

6
15 minutes · Return to base

Exit & debrief

Walk back to the base, gear return, hot shower available. The guide then sends you the photos and videos taken during the trip. For the rest of the day, the lake beach is just 500 metres away!

Your questions about the Discovery trip

Answers to questions specific to this trip at the Angon canyon.

Is this trip suitable for children?
Yes, the Angon Letterbox canyon is our most family-friendly trip, accessible from age 8. All jumps are optional (never mandatory), the approach hike is short, and technical sections are guided step by step. Many families do this trip every week in high season.
My child is afraid of water, is it still possible?
You still need to be able to swim and have basic water comfort. This trip is not suitable for children who are really afraid of immersion. For simply shy children, the guide adapts the pace and builds confidence — many leave transformed! If in doubt, contact us to discuss.
I'm not sporty, can I still do it?
Absolutely. This trip is designed for non-athletic people. The approach hike is short (10 minutes on easy trails), technical passages are all guided, and the pace adapts to the group. Normal fitness is plenty.
Do I need to know how to swim?
Yes, being able to swim is mandatory. You don't need to be a champion: being able to float, roll and move a few metres in water is enough. The neoprene wetsuit provides excellent buoyancy.
Is the water cold?
Canyon water is between 10°C and 14°C in summer. That may sound cold, but thanks to the 5mm neoprene wetsuit we provide, you only feel a pleasant coolness after a few minutes. In peak summer it's even refreshing!
Are the jumps mandatory?
No, no jump is mandatory. For every passage with a jump, there's always an alternative: abseil, guided downclimbing, or bypass. The guide explains the options and you choose. Many participants start by watching and end up jumping too!
How many participants in the group?
Our groups have between 4 and 8 people per guide, allowing real individual attention while keeping a friendly atmosphere. For organised groups (extended family, friends), we can mobilise several guides to stay together.
What happens in case of rain or storm?
Moderate rain is not a problem — you're already in the water! However, in case of storm or flood risk, the trip is cancelled for your safety. In that case, full refund or free reschedule. The decision is made by the guide based on actual flow and forecasts.
Can we take photos during the trip?
Yes, and our guides do it for you! They take photos and videos throughout the trip with a waterproof camera, and send them to you for free afterwards. You can also bring your own GoPro (helmet or chest mount recommended).
How does payment work?
You pay online when you book, by credit card on a secure platform. You immediately receive your confirmation with all practical info (address, time, list of what to bring). You can also pay directly on site if you prefer.
