A limestone fault carved by water

The Pont du Diable canyon hides in the heart of the Bauges massif, in Bellecombe-en-Bauges, just 40 minutes from Annecy. It is a canyon of character: water has cut a deep fault into the limestone, forming a narrow, spectacular gorge that you travel through jumping, abseiling and swimming.

Its name comes from the natural stone bridge spanning the gorge, visible 35 metres above your head at the heart of the descent. There the canyon narrows so much that you can almost touch both walls at once — a uniquely mineral, wild atmosphere for the area.

With its giant potholes, 5 to 10 metre drops and a long slide, it is a sporty yet accessible canyon: we run it as a private outing guided by a state-certified instructor, ideal for sporty beginners and for experienced canyoneers wanting commitment.

Pont du Diable Canyon canyoning near Annecy

Beneath the Devil's bridge, where the gorge closes in

The iconic passage comes mid-descent: the gorge suddenly narrows and the stone bridge appears 35 m above, framing a ribbon of sky. Light plunges between walls polished by millennia of erosion.

Along the way you string together giant potholes (deep round basins carved by whirlpools), jumps of 3 to 8 metres — optional and adapted to the water level — a long 6 to 7 metre slide, and up to three waterfall abseils reaching 12 metres.

It is the perfect canyon for those who want a true enclosed-gorge atmosphere, off the beaten track, with just the right amount of verticality and thrills without tipping into the extreme.
