Angon Canyon: the complete canyoning guide near Lake Annecy

Perched above Talloires, the Angon canyon is the signature canyon of Lake Annecy: a gorge carved by a crystal-clear stream, where natural slides, turquoise pools, jumps and abseils follow one another along a spectacular waterfall. Suitable for families and experienced adventurers alike, it's THE spot to know. Here's everything you need before you descend it.

1. Where is the Angon canyon?

The Angon canyon sits in the commune of Talloires-Montmin, on the eastern shore of Lake Annecy, in Haute-Savoie. It's one of the few canyons located less than thirty minutes from central Annecy, which makes it the most accessible canyoning site in the area.

The Angon stream tumbles down the slopes above Talloires before reaching the lake. Along the way it has carved a steep gorge, lined with pools and punctuated by drops: a setting that is both wild and easy to reach, between forest and limestone walls. Its closeness to the lake gives Angon a particularly photogenic light and water colour.

2. The Angon waterfall, a Talloires gem

You can't talk about Angon without its waterfall, one of the most beautiful around Lake Annecy. From Talloires, a shaded path and its wooden footbridges lead to the foot of the falls, a favourite walk in summer. But the waterfall offers a completely different experience to those who discover it from inside the canyon.

Where the walker admires the falls from below, the canyoneer abseils down them, right next to the jet of water. This long abseil — up to several dozen metres — is what makes Angon famous and delivers incomparable sensations: hanging on the rope, in the roar and the spray, you live the waterfall instead of merely looking at it.

3. The route: what you'll find

The Angon canyon has the rare quality of concentrating every facet of canyoning on a single site:

  • Natural slides, polished by the water, where you glide into the pools.
  • Jumps, from a few dozen centimetres to several metres — always optional and matched to your level.
  • Turquoise pools for swimming in clear, fresh water.
  • Abseils, from small drops to the big waterfall, all rope-guided.
  • The famous "Letterbox", a narrow, playful passage much loved on the discovery trip.

This variety explains why Angon suits a first experience as much as a technical outing: depending on the section, the mood shifts from playful to committing.

4. Three ways to descend Angon

There isn't a single descent of Angon, but several routes depending on your appetite and level — that's the beauty of the site.

The Discovery trip follows the lower section, around the Letterbox: low jumps, slides and small abseils in a reassuring atmosphere. Open to ages 8 and up, it's the ideal gateway, from €57.

The Advanced trip adds the great 35-metre abseil in the heart of the waterfall, with access via the footbridges. More sporty, it's for ages 14 and up and lasts around 3 hours.

Finally, the Full Angon runs the canyon in its entire length: 710 metres of route, 250 metres of descent and a dizzying 60-metre single-drop abseil. Reserved for experienced canyoneers, comfortable on ropes, it's the most committing version.

5. Who is it for? Level and minimum age

Angon's great strength is its modularity. No particular fitness is required for the discovery trip: being able to swim a few metres and wanting to have fun is enough. Children are welcome from age 8 on the family route.

For the trips with big abseils (Advanced and Full), a little more ease in the water and no fear of heights are a plus, and the minimum age rises to 14. In every case, progression is supervised: the guide sets the pace and always offers an alternative at any committing passage.

6. When to do the Angon canyon?

The best season for Angon runs from spring to autumn, peaking in summer when the water is most pleasant and the days are long. The stream's flow, fed by rain and snowmelt, directly shapes the mood of the descent: the more water, the stronger the sensations.

That's exactly why the date and time are chosen with the guide, based on the weather and the group's level. In a neoprene wetsuit, the fresh water is never an obstacle — it's part of the fun. And for the keenest, Angon even lends itself to winter canyoning, in a completely different, frosty atmosphere.

7. How a trip works

An Angon trip starts with a meeting point near Talloires, where you're kitted out: wetsuit, harness, helmet and neoprene socks are provided. Just bring a swimsuit, a towel and a pair of trainers that can get wet.

After a safety briefing and learning the basics (how to jump, how to position yourself on the rope), the group enters the canyon. The descent alternates walking, swimming, jumps and abseils in a natural flow that makes you lose track of time. Allow 2 to 3 hours depending on the trip, excluding preparation.

Bring: a swimsuit under the wetsuit, a towel, closed shoes that can get wet, and warm dry clothes for afterwards. All the technical gear is provided.

8. Descending Angon with a guide

The Angon canyon is a superb but demanding natural environment: abseils, reading the flow, choosing the jump zones — all of which require professional supervision. Our state-certified guides know every metre of the canyon and tailor the trip to your group, for an experience that is both intense and perfectly safe.

This is also what makes Angon accessible to everyone: with no prior experience, and with supervision, you make the most of the site without ever putting yourself in danger. Our customers agree — the guiding is regularly praised in their reviews, with a 5.0/5 rating on Google.
