Annecy canyoning topo: the guide to the routes
Which are the best canyons to descend around Annecy, and what are they really worth? Here is a genuine topo of the region's routes: grade, length, character and required level, so you can choose your descent with full knowledge.
1. How to read a canyon topo
Before choosing, a few pointers. A canyoning topo describes each route according to several criteria:
- The grade: it combines the vertical difficulty (v), the aquatic difficulty (a) and the commitment level (Roman numeral). In practice, mostly remember the colour: green (easy), red (sporty).
- Length and elevation drop: they give an idea of the duration and the effort.
- The character: a canyon that is "jump-based", "abseil-based", "playful" or "deeply enclosed" does not offer the same experience at all.
- Minimum age and required level: essential for setting off with peace of mind.
Now let's move on to the flagship routes around Annecy.
2. Angon Canyon
The Angon canyon, in Talloires by the lakeside, is the local benchmark. Its distinctive feature: it splits into several routes depending on your level, which makes it the most versatile canyon in the region.
- Lower section — discovery (from age 8): slides, small jumps and accessible abseils. Ideal for a family introduction.
- Upper section — advanced (from age 14): a great 35 m abseil right down a waterfall, sporty and spectacular.
- Angon full descent (from age 16): the complete descent, 4 h, with a 60 m free-hanging abseil. For canyoneers comfortable on ropes.
Character: verticality and big abseils. The must-do for anyone who loves waterfalls and controlled exposure.
3. Montmin Canyon
At the foot of La Tournette, the Montmin canyon is the opposite of Angon: here it is all about jumps and slides. You string together 8 to 10 jumps (from small ones up to 5-6 m), natural slides and white-water swimming, with very few ropes.
Grade: sporty, from age 14. Character: playful and aquatic. This is the canyon for groups of friends and thrill-seekers, where you keep moving non-stop for 2 hours. Every jump remains optional.
4. Pont du Diable Canyon
Forty minutes from Annecy, in the Bauges, the Pont du Diable canyon offers the most spectacular scenery: a deeply enclosed gorge with a 50 m drop over 200 m, topped by a natural stone bridge 35 m high. Giant potholes, jumps of up to 8 m and abseils under waterfalls set the pace of the descent.
Grade: sporty (red), from age 12. Character: a mineral, deeply enclosed gorge. The "adventure" route par excellence.
5. The region's other canyons
Beyond the big three, the Annecy area gives access to more confidential canyons, each with its own signature:
- Eau Rousse (Tarentaise, easy): the family canyon, with optional jumps and a monkey bridge.
- Grenant (Chartreuse, easy): limestone slides and small caves, one of the first to open as early as April.
- Groin (Bugey, sporty): a unique cave-like descent, with caves, siphons and long swims.

6. When to go? Season and conditions
The canyoning season around Annecy generally runs from June to September, when the flow of the torrents is ideal. Grenant is the exception and opens as early as April. The water flow, which depends on snowmelt and rainfall, determines how practicable a canyon is: a guide will always cancel an outing if there is a risk of flooding.
And for the most dedicated, the adventure doesn't stop in summer: winter canyoning lets you descend Angon in a drysuit, in the heart of frozen landscapes, from November to April.
7. Understanding the grading in detail
To go beyond the simple colour, here is how to decode a canyon grade, useful for comparing routes against one another:
- Verticality (v1 to v7): it measures the technical difficulty of the abseils and rope descents. A v2-v3 remains accessible with a guide; beyond that, the canyon requires experience.
- Aquatic (a1 to a7): it assesses the commitment in the water — current, jumps, siphons, swimming. Groin, with its siphons, climbs higher on this scale.
- Commitment (I to VI, in Roman numerals): it indicates how difficult it is to escape the canyon once you have committed. The higher it is, the more serious the canyon.
In practice, for a guided outing, you don't need to master these subtleties: the guide picks a route suited to your group. But understanding the grade helps you gauge the step up between a discovery outing and a more committing canyon.
8. Access and logistics
One of the great advantages of canyoning in Annecy is how close the spots are. The Angon and Montmin canyons are just a few minutes from the lake, which lets you combine a morning outing with an afternoon at the beach. The canyons in the neighbouring massifs require a little more driving:
- Angon: in Talloires, by the lake — meet at the chalet, immediate access.
- Montmin: on the Faverges side, you reach the canyon by carpooling with the guide (≈ 20 min).
- Pont du Diable: ≈ 40 min, in the Bauges.
- Eau Rousse, Grenant, Groin: 50 min to 1 h, in the surrounding massifs, on a private outing.
In every case, the meeting point and the logistics are confirmed to you when you book. Just bring a swimsuit, sports trainers and a towel: everything else is provided.
