Family canyoning in Annecy: what age, which canyon?
Want to share a real adventure with your kids by Lake Annecy? Canyoning is one of the few outdoor activities that brings young and old together in the same playground: natural slides, turquoise pools and small jumps, all fully supervised. Here's everything you need to know for a successful first family trip — age, canyon, safety and how it works.
1. From what age?
It's the first question every parent asks. The answer: our family canyoning trips are open from age 8. At that age, a child has the height, coordination and independence to move through a suitable canyon safely — and, above all, with huge enjoyment.
The minimum age isn't arbitrary: it matches the chosen route. For the youngest, we favour a playful, progressive canyon where every obstacle stays within reach. Teenagers and adults can move on to more sporty trips. The idea: everyone finds their level, with no one bored or out of their depth.
2. Why families love canyoning
Unlike many activities where children watch the adults have fun (or the other way around), canyoning is lived together. Everyone descends the same canyon, tackles the same slides, jumps into the same pools. It's this shared experience that creates unforgettable memories.
For children, it's a fantastic real-life adventure playground: they slide, swim, jump and explore a wild gorge like in a film. For parents, it's a chance to watch them grow in confidence passage after passage, often far bolder than expected. And for everyone, it's a total disconnection: no screens, just water, rock and laughter.
3. Which canyon with children?
Around Annecy, several canyons are perfect for a family trip. The choice depends on the children's age and how comfortable they are in the water.
The Discovery trip in the Angon canyon, at Talloires, is the go-to for a family first-timer: from age 8, it follows the lower section around the famous "Letterbox", with low, optional jumps, slides and small abseils in a reassuring atmosphere (from €57).
The Eau Rousse canyon is another excellent family option: jumps, slides and a monkey bridge, accessible from age 8, as a private trip. And for slightly older, confident children, the Grenant canyon (easy, from age 8) offers slides and waterfalls over a long season.
4. Safety: what reassures parents
This is THE key point, and it must be said clearly: supervised, family canyoning is a very safe activity. Nothing is left to chance.
- A state-certified guide leads every trip, knows the canyon inside out, checks each jump zone and adjusts the pace to the children.
- The gear is provided and suited to kids: neoprene wetsuit (which keeps warm and helps you float), helmet, harness — in children's sizes.
- No jump is ever compulsory. At each passage there's an alternative: bypass, down-climb or a small abseil. The child (like the adult) chooses.
- Groups are supervised and progression is gentle: we always start with the simplest passages.
This care is exactly what our customers value most: our guides are regularly praised in reviews, with a 5.0/5 rating on Google.
5. Do you need to swim or be sporty?
No need to be an athlete. For a family discovery trip, you just need to be comfortable in the water and able to swim a few metres. The neoprene wetsuit provides good buoyancy, which reassures children and less-confident parents alike.
The fitness required is modest: a little walking, a little swimming, jumping only when you feel like it. Children are often the most at ease — their energy and lack of fear work wonders. What matters isn't performance, but the desire to have fun in the water.
6. How a family trip works
The meeting point is near Talloires. After kitting up (wetsuit, helmet, harness) and a child-friendly safety briefing, the group enters the canyon with the guide. The descent alternates short walks, slides, swims in the pools and optional jumps.
The guide paces the trip to the group's energy: breaks, encouragement, little challenges on demand. Allow around 2 hours in the water for a discovery trip, preparation included. Afterwards comes the snack and the tales of feats — because every child leaves proud to have "done canyoning".
7. What to bring for the children
The good news: almost all the technical gear is provided. On your side, simply bring:
- A swimsuit to wear under the wetsuit;
- A pair of closed trainers that can get wet (no flip-flops or sandals);
- A towel and warm, dry clothes for afterwards;
- A snack to recharge the youngest.
Also make sure they get a good night's sleep beforehand: a canyoning trip burns energy, and children often sleep very well that evening!
8. When to come as a family
The best period for family canyoning runs from late spring to autumn, peaking in summer: the water is more pleasant, the days are long, and it becomes a perfect outing during the school holidays.
The exact slot (morning or afternoon) and the canyon are chosen with us, based on weather, flow and the children's age. In high season, it's best to book ahead to secure the place and time that suit the whole family.
