What to pack for a canyoning trip?

First canyoning trip coming up around Annecy? Good news: you have almost nothing to prepare, because most of the technical gear is provided. Just a few essentials not to forget — starting with the shoes, the detail everyone overlooks. Here's the full list of what to wear, what to bring… and what to leave at home.

Canyoning gear: neoprene wetsuit, helmet and harness near Annecy
Most of the technical gear is provided: you just handle the rest.

1. What's provided (nothing to bring)

With us, all the technical safety gear is included in the trip. You don't have to buy or rent anything:

  • The neoprene wetsuit (which keeps you warm in the fresh water and helps you float);
  • The helmet;
  • The harness for abseiling;
  • All the collective gear (ropes, carabiners) managed by the guide.

In other words, you arrive almost empty-handed. The guide kits you out at the start and checks every item before entering the canyon.

2. What to wear on the day

Under the wetsuit, simply wear a swimsuit (put it on before you arrive — it's easier). Women can go for a one-piece or a well-fitting two-piece; men, swim shorts or a swim brief.

In cooler weather or early/late season, a thin technical t-shirt (not cotton) can be worn under the neoprene for extra comfort. The guide will advise based on the day's weather.

3. Shoes: the crucial point

This is THE detail everyone forgets, and yet the most important: you need a pair of closed shoes that can go in the water. You walk, swim and push off slippery rocks — shoes that stay on your feet are essential.

Ideal: old sports trainers (that don't mind getting wet) or water-sports shoes with a grippy sole. They should be well laced and support the ankle.

Absolutely avoid: flip-flops, sandals, crocs or brand-new shoes. They slip, get lost in the water or fall apart — and spoil the trip.

4. What to put in your bag

For after the trip (the canyon itself is done without a bag, left at the start or carried by the guide), pack a small bag with:

  • A towel;
  • Warm, dry clothes to change into (even in summer, you come out of the water cool);
  • A bottle of water and an energy snack;
  • Sun cream and maybe a cap for the wait;
  • Your ID / car keys (kept safe before you set off).

5. What NOT to bring

To enjoy it with a clear mind, leave at home (or in the car):

  • Valuables and jewellery (rings, watches, necklaces) — they're quickly lost while swimming or jumping;
  • Your phone, unless in a solid waterproof pouch (at your own risk);
  • Cotton clothes to wear in the water (they hold the cold);
  • A big bag: pointless, everything is done light.
Guide's tip: take off rings and earrings before you leave. Every season, wedding rings end up at the bottom of a pool!

6. For families and children

For a family trip, the principle is the same: wetsuit, helmet and harness are provided in children's sizes. Above all, remember closed trainers in their size and warm spare clothes — children get cold faster. A little snack at the end is always welcome. 7. What about photos?

No need to risk your phone in the water: on our trips, the guide regularly takes photos of your group during the descent. You leave with real memories, without the stress of dropping your device in a pool. Just ask when you book your trip.

No. The neoprene wetsuit, helmet and harness are provided. You only need to come with a swimsuit, closed shoes that can go in the water, and a towel.

What shoes for canyoning?

Closed, well-laced shoes that don't mind water: old sports trainers or water-sports shoes with a grippy sole. Avoid flip-flops, sandals and crocs.

Can you bring your phone canyoning?

Not recommended, unless in a solid waterproof pouch and at your own risk. Best to leave the phone safe. Our guides take photos of the trip.

What to wear under the canyoning wetsuit?

A swimsuit, simply. In cooler weather, a thin technical t-shirt (never cotton) can add comfort. The guide advises based on the weather.
